Principal Investigator: Elizabeth Powers

Project Type: Small Grant

Project Year: 03

Thematic Category: Transition to Work

Project Summary:

This project has two major goals. The first is to assess the major activities that former SSI-child beneficiaries are engaged in as young adults. The second is to identify factors in the family environments of SSI-child beneficiaries that influence their successful transition to adult work. The first aim is achieved by characterizing the primary activities in young adulthood of former child SSI beneficiaries. The second is achieved by analyzing the influence of specific factors in the childhood environment on the probability of a successful transition to self-sufficiency through work. This project proposes to link public-use household data to administrative records on Social Security covered earnings and SSI recipiency, in order to assemble a rich picture of the childhood environment of SSI-child beneficiaries and to characterize their ultimate attainment along various dimensions.
